Adapting to a Foggy Future Along Trans?Arctic Shipping Routes

نویسندگان

چکیده

Rapid retreat of Arctic sea ice extends the area open ocean for new trans-Arctic shipping routes. However, projected routes may be too optimistic in terms savings costs from shortened distances as they do not consider increased fog frequency (SFF) over areas retreating ice. We show that delays due to can 1–4 days, about 23%–27% along Northwest Passage and 4%–11% Northern Sea Route than previous estimated. design a route based on sea-ice extent SFF. The reduce sailing time by 0.3–1 day detouring with lighter impacts fog. More importantly will lower risk catastrophic accidents compared shortest saves additional unscheduled port calls.

Sea ice decline and 21st century trans-Arctic shipping routes

The observed decline in Arctic sea ice is projected to continue, opening shorter trade routes across the Arctic Ocean, with potentially global economic implications. Here we quantify, using Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 global climate model simulations calibrated to remove spatial biases, how projected sea ice loss might increase opportunities for Arctic transit shipping. By mid...

Wave height incidence on Mediterranean Short Sea Shipping routes

According to the recent mid term review of the EU white paper on transport, Short Sea Shipping in EU waters is expected to grow from 2000 to 2020 at a rate of 59% in volume (metric tonnes). If we consider that the overall expected growth in freight exchanges is of 50% (also in volume), sea transport is one of the most feasible ways to reduce traffic congestion on European roads. High speed vess...

New Trans-Arctic shipping routes navigable by midcentury.

Recent historic observed lows in Arctic sea ice extent, together with climate model projections of additional ice reductions in the future, have fueled speculations of potential new trans-Arctic shipping routes linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. However, numerical studies of how projected geophysical changes in sea ice will realistically impact ship navigation are lacking. To address this...

Reducing fuel emissions by optimizing speed on shipping routes

Fuel consumption and emissions on a shipping route are typically a cubic function of speed. Given a shipping route consisting of a sequence of ports with a time window for the start of service, substantial savings can be achieved by optimizing the speed of each leg. This problem is cast as a non-linear continuous program, which can be solved by a non-linear programming solver. We propose an alt...

Transarctic acoustic telemetry.

On April 9 and 13, 1999, two Arctic Climate Observation Using Underwater Sound tomography signals were transmitted from a 20.5-Hz acoustic source moored at the Franz Victoria Strait to an eight-element, 525-m vertical array at ice camp APLIS in the Chukchi Sea at a distance of ∼2720 km. The transmitted signal was a 20-min long, 255-digit m-sequence that can be treated as a binary-phase shift-ke...
